The picture of Mr Kaplan
Mr Kaplan was born in murzzuschlag, Austria into a railroad worker's family. He graduated from high school in Vienna in 1895, he studied in Technical University of Vienna, where he studied civil engineering and specialised in diesel engines. From 1900 to 1901 he was drafted into military service in Pula. the Kaplan turbine, a revolutionary water turbine that was especially fitted to produce electricity from large streams with only a moderate incline. From 1912 to 1913 he received four patents on these kinds of turbines.In 1918 the first Kaplan turbine was intalled in in Lower Austria,26 kW output power and with a diameter of 60 cm, This small Kaplan turbine was developed by Storek construction company for a textile manufacturer . This turbine was used until 1955, with a long history for this kaplan turbine,and today this kaplan turbine is exhibited at the Technisches Museum Wien. After the successful installation of the first Kaplan turbines they started being used worldwide and remain one of the most widely used types of water turbines now.
Kaplan Water Turbine is widely used in hydro power plants with the low head from 1.5m to 15m.Design water flow from 0.5m3/Sto 60m3/S. they are included in runner, shaft, guide van and Governor. Installing capacity up to about 15000 kW for turbine . Normally it is a vertical shaft arrangement. But horizontal shaft arrangement is available to save civil works.
Complete range of specific speeds for runner design allows optimized matching to synchronous speed. Their SKF bearings rated for more than 100 000 hours of operation.
They are made in horizontal and vertical arrangement and only with the direct connection to the generator or with belt connection to the generator.
Runner and guide wheel regulation. Designed as a monoblock, and is used primarily in reconstructions of older plants.
Guide wheel performs the function of both the operational and closure system solved by gravity or pressure accumulator.
Installation is either with transfer belt or with a direct connection to the generator.
